Watertown, SD — Watertown Mayor Sarah Caron says the city is still on two parallel paths looking for the right location for a new ice arena.  She said the Watertown Mall and city architects are both working to create plans for the new facility.  She said the city is not paying two architects though, and not working on a mall design until the council decides which location might best serve the community.

Mayor Caron says the mall owners are working furiously to come up with a proposals that the city might find acceptable.

She says the bare bones approach would allow for expansion as more dollars become available.

The mayor says the bond money currently set aside for the ice arena must be spent this year or it will go away. She said an additional two million dollars in sponsorship money might be needed and she’s confident it can be found.

Caron said it’s time for the Mall to come forward with a strategic plan so the arena can move forward.

She says that about 6-7 million dollars above what the city already has would complete the project to the original plans. A decision is expected within the next month.
